Ettifos announced on Tuesday February 11th that news of its 5G-V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) modem chipset development was selected as one of the six key industry advancements of Q4 2024 at the 33rd 5GAA F2F Meeting Week held in Washington, D.C.
The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) is a global cross-industry organization focused on developing end-to-end future mobility and transportation service solutions centered around Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology.
Ettifos Co. is a startup specializing in V2X communication technology and was the first in the world to commercialize a 5G-V2X solution. Last year, Ettifos secured Series A investment of KRW 8.5 billion led by LB Investment with participation from Korea Development Bank, L&S Venture Capital and BNK Venture Capital. The company is currently in the process of raising Series B funding.
V2X is a critical communication technology for autonomous driving and connected mobility. Ettifos developed a Software Defined Modem (SDM) solution that implements the C-V2X standard adopted in China, the United States, and South Korea.
Ettifos' SDM solution offers the flexibility to switch between the current LTE-V2X standard to the latest 5G-V2X standard through a simple software update, eliminating the need for hardware replacement. This SDM solution, which updates the communication modem via OTA, offers the key advantage of reducing maintenance cost of V2X systems in vehicles or on road infrastructure.
In November 2024, Ettifos was selected to receive government backing for its 5G-V2X modem chipset development through the COMPASS prototype development project, organized by the Korea Semiconductor Research Consortium and supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. It was also selected as 2024 'First Penguin' through South Korea’s KODIT innovation startup support program.
Ettifos CEO, Hojun Kim, stated: "The V2X research and development and industry ecosystem in South Korea is inevitably subject to the pricing and policies of foreign semiconductor companies. Small and medium enterprises in the V2X field, as well as national research institutions, often have to accept the terms and schedules imposed by foreign V2X semiconductor companies or worse, fail to receive supply." He further added, "Based on our innovative SDM technology, Ettifos plans to release a 5G-V2X chipset in the second half of this year to enhance the competitiveness of South Korea's V2X industry and supply V2X modem chipsets to the global market."
